In August, we welcomed James Morris into the ThreeTenSeven team as a design intern.
Tell us a bit about yourself
Hi, I am James, and I’m a graphic design student from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. I am currently studying at Sheffield Hallam University and will returning for my final year shortly. I have a specific interest in branding and motion design; however, I like a bit of everything. During college my ambition was to become an animator, so I took film studies, however 6 weeks in I chose to move onto a graphic design A-level, and I instantly fell in love. Inspired by my tutor’s passion, and the work of David Carson and Neville Brody, I became a bit of a nerd for design, and spent all my time learning about it, and working on various projects. Now at university, I am working hard to develop my technical skills, across various software, and improve my design process in preparation for entering the industry post-graduation.
How did you find out about ThreeTenSeven? Why did you want to do an internship here?
I had been aware of ThreeTenSeven, for a few months, prior to Erik Winterburn from TTS visiting my university, however after speaking to him about ThreeTenSeven and the work they produced, specialising in healthcare, I was immediately interested in applying to spend some time in the studio, during an internship. The focus on design for healthcare particularly interested me, as at that moment I was working on a project for the RSA student design awards, focused on the social care sector, where I produced a public exhibition to be used to raise awareness of what makes you a carer in the Moor Market in Sheffield. The process of researching, discussing my work with charities and testing my outcomes gave me great insight into the issue, and made working on the project feel extremely rewarding. This made me realise my desire to apply my career to important causes, rather than solely commercial work, which I felt I could experience at ThreeTenSeven.
How has your internship been? What have you worked on?
This internship with ThreeTenSeven has been invaluable to me as I have learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed every second. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind, you can tell they enjoy their jobs because the vibe throughout the office is so positive and warm. Through my time here the standard has been set for what I should look for in a company and coworkers. I have produced work for a variety of areas, such as imagery for the TTS social media and website, the design of internal documents, and brand guideline documents for clients. I particularly enjoyed creating development designs, as it gave me valuable insight into presenting ideas to clients. I appreciated the process of basing design choices on thorough research and carefully considering the different elements used, as well as how clients might react to them. Other than design work I really I loved helping produce the little library, by painting and varnishing, and participating in the “Great ThreeTenSeven Bake Off”.
What are your future aspirations?
In the near future I am looking forward to going back to university, producing some interesting work and graduating with strong skills to prepare me for my career. Post graduation I will look to take my first steps into the industry, ideally as a designer in a studio, like ThreeTenSeven.
