Sustainability & the environment

We take our responsibility to the planet seriously. We believe that it's our responsibility to use Thompson as a vehicle for making as much change in the world as possible – after all, we spend much of our lives at work.

That's why in 2020 we publicly set out that we are working towards being on the most sustainable agencies in the UK by the end of 2024. This is something we’re racing ahead on. We report on this annually via our impact report.

We are currently working through the accreditation process for becoming a B-Corp, of which environmental sustainability is a key measure. The process is helping us to identify even more areas in which we can improve.

Our strategy to improve the environmental performance of Thompson includes the following activities, introduced or enhanced recently:

Carrying out environmental audits on all of our suppliers and products

The entire business help set criteria for assessing environmental credentials and then helped audit all areas of the business and look for ways to improve and to find more sustainable alternatives, for us at work and at home.

Choosing sustainable, ethical, cruelty-free products for the office

All hand washes and cleaning products are certified cruelty-free, natural-based, ethically made and vegan. We buy in bulk to cut down on transport and shipping. We use the most sustainable loo roll going and provide free, eco-friendly period products to the team.

Reducing our waste

We avoid products that use non-recyclable packaging. Where we can’t avoid single-use plastic, we buy in bulk instead, so the overall quantity of packaging is reduced.

Cutting down on energy use

From switching off the lights, to powering down computers at night, we try to reduce wherever we can, and we use a sustainable energy provider.

Greener transport

Public transport is encouraged for all employees, incentivised through the free Cycle to Work scheme and currently in the process of installing an electric car-charging point.

Looking for local
We use a local fruit and milk delivery service and choose local products wherever possible, including stationery supplies and, importantly, beer.

'Recycling afficionados'

We have on-site recycling for all standard waste types, plus crisp packets, ink cartridges, glass and batteries.

Sustainable celebrations

We’re not being Scrooges but we no longer send Christmas cards or gifts, to avoid waste. Instead we host our elderly neighbours for Christmas dinner.

Working from home environmental impact assessment

We have an environmental impact assessment which we ask all team members to carry out. This includes asking them to self-assess their own environmental impact in their home-working setup, and to identify areas for improvement and reductions in potentially negative activities.

Monitoring and assessment

We are currently developing an ongoing monitoring structure, led by advice from the B-Corp process. This will include training for middle management and inclusion of environmental objectives and reporting in board meetings and reports, on a bi-annual basis. Annual impact reporting will bgin soon.
